Paul Phipps (1880-1953)

The Honourable Paul Phipps (1880-1953) studied at Balliol College at Oxford. He trained with Edwin Lutyens from 1901-1904, at the end of his apprenticeship he set up his own practice in London. In 1919 he formed a partnership with Oswald Milne (Phipps & Milne). Specialising mainly in Country House design and alterations, these include Quietways, in Kent, Garden Pavilion and Bathing Pool at Downshire House in Roehampton and The Shaw in Kent.

Paul Phipps designed many houses including, Romany, on the Wentworth Estate in Virginia Water, Surrey for Lady Madame de Lafont. His brother Capt. W.D. Phipps asked him to make the alterations to his own home Dean Farm, Oaksey, Wiltshire.

Paul Phipps daughter was the actress Joyce Grenfell.
